Snow Many Snow Globes!

I love snow!!!!  (I really do)
We finally got our first storm of the year.

We began the month of January with the writing prompt, "If I Lived in a Snow Globe." I saw so many great examples of the craft (on Pinterest) and wanted to incorporate it with a writing lesson.

We first brainstormed a list of what we should include in our prompts.
  • a great beginning
  • how I got in there
  • sensory images
  • figurative language
  • feelings
  • what I would do in the snow globe
  • a great ending
The children were very excited and could not wait to start.  I had them use a four-square to organize their stories.  I conferenced with them and had them publish on a border snowflake paper.  I ran it through the copy machine to make it lined.

I used this pattern for the base

I purchased clear plastic Chinet plates at Target.  I traced them to make a globe template.  The kids traced and cut them out on the blue poster board.  They added snow on the bottom and stamped the trees and snowflakes (stampin up).  They cut out their photos.  I had the kids put a handful of fake glitter snow on top in the middle.  I used a hot glue gun to attach the plate.  I found it was easier to hot glue after all pieces were attached to background paper.

Here are examples of the final products:

  7. Really great idea! I had thought of taking kids pic in a pose that looks like they're hanging a Christmas ornament. I bought some styrofoam Christmas trees for the kids to decorate at Target. Then I would put that in the snowflake. Thank you for sharing!

  8. Can you explain exactly how you glued the pics to the plates? Around the edge? I'm confused, I don't see a glue line in any of your pics so I'm just wondering how you did it and kept it all looking pretty. Love this idea, it is soo adorable and I would love to do it with my kids!

  9. I used a hot glue gun. You can see it if you look carefully. I found it easiest to left up the plate a little and put the glue on the paper...if that makes sense. Or glue around the lip of the plate on the paper.

  11. First of all...these are adorable!!! What is the Four Square template you used that helped them organize their writing?

    1. To help my students organize their writing we use the four square graphic organizer. We just fold a paper into four squares and put events in each box. Google images for "four square writing" and you will get many examples.

  12. Did the kids cut out their pictures? I teach 3rd grade and I don't know if some of my kids could cut it out without leaving a big edge or accidently cutting off a leg or arm....
