Pirates' Treasure: Coordinate Graphing Lesson (and a Freebie)

Coordinate Graphing
with Captain Cora D. Nate
I love teaching coordinate graphing!  I wanted to create a PIRATE lesson (inspired by Teach Like a Pirate) and I decided to literally become a pirate.  I wanted to go with a treasure map and made a giant coordinate graph. I created a Power Point to teach about coordinates and introduce the activity. My students worked in four teams and took turns pulling coordinates and finding their treasure.  It gave my students a hands-on approach to learning and kept them engaged.  The kids even had the opportunity to to do a little looting.
They counted their treasure and practiced adding money using decimals at the end of the lesson, and even ordered the amount least to greatest.  It was a huge success!
You can create your own materials or check out my product that I have created for TPT.  I also included another small game board version for the lesson, small groups, centers or additional practice.  Check it out here.  Pirates' Treasure.
Here is the product preview.
I have created a coordinate game called Pirateship!

Friday's Five Fabulous Finds: Solar System #2

Today is the end of my school vacation week.  I spent the week getting organized around the house and wrapping up my new science unit called "Earth's Place in Space."

Spring has finally arrived in NewEngland.  It feels good to open the windows and get outside.  Everything is beginning to turn green and pop up.

Show and Tell Tuesday

I am on spring break this week and loving that our New England weather is finally starting to feel like spring!  I have been busy organizing the house and getting some things done on the computer.

This is the first time I am linking up with Forever in Fifth Grade's linky party called "Show and Tell Tuesday."  Here are four things that I would love to show and tell about it.
This year I became one of the dance coaches for our Middle School Dance Club, for grades 5-8.  We had our show last Wednesday.  The girls danced to songs that related to colors.  The masks were for Michael Jackson's "Black and White."  I was so proud of the girls!
My husband made me a Giant Jenga game last week for my classroom.  I need to paint the ends of the blocks so I can create groups of questions for math practice.  The teacher under my classroom is not going to be happy...LOL!
Last Thursday was my 26th wedding anniversary.  I had been waking up way before the alarm and found this waiting for me at 4:30am.  I felt bad because I was not ready and was planning to get a card on the way home from school.  I wrote a love note on a sticky!  Oh well.
I dressed up as a pirate to introduce my new math unit.  I taught coordinate graphing lesson with a giant graph that I made from a tarp.  I am working on a TPT to go with the lesson but it is still in the works.  My kids loved collecting their bags of treasure and counting their loot.  Arghhhh!!!
Those are my picks for show and tell.
Leave a comment below and hop on over to Forever in Fifth Grade to join in the fun.

Rock Cycle with Starbursts

I am teaching an after school science class and we have had some fun reviewing science concepts from grades 3-5.  One of my favorite science units to teach is "Rocks and Minerals."  My kids loved making the three types of rocks and learning about the rock cycle using Starburst.
Follow the order of the photos when doing the activity.
This activity is also available in my "Digging into the Geosphere Unit" on TPT.  It was designed for students in Grades 3-5.  The unit has a recording sheet for the rock cycle.  Click here for link!
