The Best Part of Me

Here is a project that I have done for many years with my third graders.  I moved up to fourth grade this year and I have a handful of the same students, so I can't do it again until next year!

I read the book "The Best Part of Me."  The book is written by children who describe their favorite body parts.  I have my kids pick their favorite part of their bodies and write a descriptive poem or paragraph.  I also read some of my favorites from past students.  I don't give any guidelines or a rubric, which they love!

I take a black and white photo and zoom in on their part.  I put one copy into their portfolio books and I created a large scrapbook for the School Art Auction.  I made a photo collage for the title page.  I mounted everything on black and white paper.

This is one of my all time favorite lessons!  I hope you do it with your class.

  2. I have done something similar in the past. I LOVE THIS BOOK! I'm thinking of doing something similar for the end of year like, "The Best Part of 4th Grade". Great way to end the year on a happy positive note! P.S. LOVE your portfolio pages! -Becky :)

  4. I have done this with my second graders. I think it is a really neat project, and the kids love doing it too. They really give a lot of thought to what their best part is.

  5. I use this book with my third graders too! The twist I put on it is after reading and discussing, we think of our moms. What is the best "part" of our moms?? The kids write poems and draw pictures then we give it to our moms for Mother's Day!

  6. Kelly...thank you so much for such a great idea! I wouldn't say you couldn't do it with the students from last year. Maybe they have a another part they like now...it might be neat to have them do another one so you could compare it! Well, I will have to definitely do this! Thanks for another awesome post!

  10. Love this! We had an photography artist-in-residence come teach us about photography. Kids took pictures of each other and wrote about their best part. Then we learned about mounting pictures. They always turn out amazing! (I have a blog post about them...http://chickadeejubilee.blogspot.com/2011/11/photography-amazingness.html
