Common Core Poetry

My school just installed projectors in all the classrooms this year and I have been trying to find  ways to use it in all subject areas.  I downloaded the Kindle app on to my PC desktop and you can view Kindle books on the projector without a document reader.

I purchased The Poetry Friday Anthology (Common Core All Grades K-5)  E-book for $9.99.  You can buy one grade level for $3.99, I recommend all because each poem refers a poem from another grade level to share for comparison, structural elements, styles, themes, etc. This book is worth it!!!
The Poetry Friday Anthology (Common Core ALL GRADES (K-5) e-book) (The Poetry Friday Anthology E-book Series (Grade-by-Grade))
There are 36 weeks of poems for each grade level, but my favorite part is the page after the poem that gives suggestions on how to teach  and share it with the kids.  For example, before reading the poem about a crocodile show a video clip of a crocodile moving, then share the poem.  Go to Amazon and check it out!
Here are my children acting out a poem about football.  We read "Running Back" and "Watching Football."  They were both free verse poems about watching football on TV.  I had three children take turns pantomiming the poem while the children read it with expression and worked on fluency.  It was only my second week sharing poems from the book, but I knew it was a hit, when they came in on Friday asking when we were doing the poems.

I plan to make a binder of the poems we share for partner reading during Daily Five.

  4. Poetry is fabulous for literacy! I just sent this link on to the authors, Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell. If you don't know about Amy Ludwig Vanderwater's The Poem Farm blog or others at Poetry Friday on the web, check out Laura Purdie Salas's blog. Sylvia has a wonderful blog, too! I developed a way to get kids to painlessly love, know, memorize, recite, perform, read, write and learn from poetry in 3rd grade. Tim Rasinski's work shows that using poetry to help readers makes a big difference in many areas. So it is great to see you using the Poetry Friday Anthology. So glad I found your blog! Janet F.
You might also enjoy Ed DeCaria's thinkkidthink blog and his March Madness Poetry. It was great fun last year.

  7. There is a great blog post today for Poetry Monday at No Water River. It is an interview with Janet and Sylvia about The Poetry Friday Anthology as well as videos of 4 poets reading their poems from the book! Renee la Tulippe did an amazing job on her post! Great to share with kids. I think Poetry Friday Anthology should be on every teacher's desk! Sylvia has another very helpful recent book called The Poetry Teacher's Book of Lists. Janet's poems and poetry collections are fabulous. Janet has a very clever way of using a suitcase full of items to relate poems to kids and if you don't know her or her poems, a visit to her site, janetwong.com, and a google search will let you get to know her better. It's definitely worth it!!! I love seeing how your kids are enjoying acting out the poems. Here is a bit of advice, which you probably already know: never underestimate what kids will be interested in with poetry. Trust poetry to engage practically all kids!! Janet F.
