Building Materials & Simple Machines (Freebie)

Simple Machines & Engineering Unit

I had my husband put together bags of building materials:
nails
screws
piece of wood
piece of plastic
piece of pipe
wire
nuts and bolt
bracket
cardboard
zip tie
etc.
The students had to pick eight things that they would use to build a house from the bags.  They had to name the item, what it was made out of and identify purpose.
  Love my fun-loving fifth graders!
I had each group share one item and continued around the room until everything was shared.

Simple Machines

We watched a few video clips and read about the 6 simple machines.  I broke my two classes into six groups.  They created posters and shared them with their class.

Poster Requirements:
definition
facts
examples
illustration or diagram
I have the wooden models of the machines that my students love to use.

Sir Cumference and AngLegs: Geometry

I pulled out one of my favorite math books to review some geometry terms this week.  I read "Sir Cumference and the First Round Table."  I read the book and had my students use AngLegs to create the polygons in the story.  We reviewed vocabulary including sides, vertices, angles, parallel, perpendicular, right, acute and obtuse.

As I was reading, I remembered the tree slab my husband had cut for my science display.  I ran and grabbed it and used it as a prop for the ending with Lady Di Ameter, Radius and Sir Cumference.  My impromptu lesson was a hit!!!
I love the AngLegs to teach my fifth graders about the types of triangles and quadrilaterals.  They click together and have protractors that also click on to measure angles.  I have six bags and found that there was plenty for all of my students.  (thank you Donor's Choose)

More Magnets! and a Freebie

We have spent the last few weeks reviewing Physical Science for our upcoming state science test.  It is based on Grade 3-5 curriculum and the students need to refresh their skills.

Magnets is the one time I let my students "play" with the materials.  They are just plain fun.  Who can resist sticking them on things, and trying to collect as many objects as possible?

The magnet standards include sorting objects, magnet poles attract and repel, magnetic fields and types of magnets (permanent, temporary and electromagnets). I used stations to review most of the concepts with the kids.  I will be creating TPT energy units over the summer.

Extra Gum Task Card Holder

I am obsessed with Extra gum and just finished my first pack in the new plastic holder. (They fit right in my car console)  The teacher in me could not throw it out.  I figured I could use it for something.  They are the perfect size for task cards or any kind of cards that size.  Now to get some more!
