Happy Leap Year!
I created a fun activity for Leap Day! (February 29th is almost here) The kids will be long jumping and recording their data. I plan on making a class line plot after the groups complete their sheets. My class will love leaping in the hallway and recording their long jumps.

I am Poetry
I Am Poetry
Here is a poetry project that I did the first week of school. I was going through pictures from this year and never shared these. The kids loved making them and they look great hanging up or in a binder. Here are the sheets that I created to use for publishing.
Some of my students used their extra pieces to put in their journals.

I was inspired by the pictures on the bottom left and the "I am" sheet on the right. They were both one of my first pins that I found on Pinterest last summer. The "I am" sheet is from the blog below. I used the sheet for pre-writing.
Click on the image below on the right to download.
I cut pieces of scrapbook paper and cardstock to fit in the trading card sleeves. (you can get ten pieces if you cut them 3 1/2" by 2 1/2") You can buy the sleeves at Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, etc.
I had them decorate both sides so I could hang on a clothesline that goes across the classroom for Open House. They picked picked out 17 lines from the poem and added one picture.
Here are a few more samples.

Smarty Pants
I saw the cutest classroom display entitled "Smarty Pants" using a little pair of jeans from http://theinspiredapple.blogspot.com/. The teacher stitched the bottoms of the jeans and filled them with Smarties to give to her students as a reward. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to use any candy or food in the classroom. (sad face) I was determined to come up with something creative.....A Writing Prompt!
I printed out the sign and got some hand-me down little jeans and came up with a writing idea for my fourth graders... "A Time That I Felt Smart." I had them brainstorm a list, in their journals, of times that they have learned or accomplished something that made them feel really smart. The kids then choose their favorite topic. Their next step was to organize ideas with a four square and write a five paragraph essay.
Some of the topics chosen:
Some of the topics chosen:
- passing my multiplication facts
- doing well on MCAS
- helping dad with a recipe
- learning how to do long division
- graduating from OT
- learning how to write my name in cursive
Here is my pattern that I used for the jeans and pockets. I copied the jeans on blue card stock. I printed out the pockets on my computer. I used eyelets on the pockets. They came out adorable!

Sweet Reads
I am trying to keep my class motivated with their independent reading. Last month's paint chip bookmarks was a success. (we read 11 more books than in December) So came up with a new challenge for February...Sweet Reads. For every book they read, they can add a heart to my bulletin board.
The box is a foam board and I enlarged the conversation hearts from Google images. I used the font "brush script" to create the title. I created the banner with microsoft shapes.
Here is the board that inspired me...I think I need to add a border to mine!

Another Boggle Board!
I have seen so many versions of the Boggle Board and I finally made mine. Here it is!!!! My plan was to use it during Daily 5 for Word Work, but I am going to use it once a week as an activity during Morning Meeting. That way everyone will get to it.
The board that I fell in love with was on a bulletin board and my dilemma all year was where to put it. Tara at Fourth Grade Frolics posted her version and I had to be a big copy cat...Thanks Tara!!!! Visit her site for the cute letters. http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2012/01/boggle-board-word-work-fun.html

The metal board is an "oil drip pan" that is sold at auto parts stores. It is quite large(25" x 36") but is movable and very sturdy. I bought mine at Auto Zone for $9.99. The metal is magnetic. After I started assembling the game I decided that I did not want to put 52 letters on magnets so I used paper clips on the blue oak tag and ran clear packing tape in between the rows. This could be made on large foam board. I did find a magnetic note pad holder that is perfect for the storage of letters. The black is duct tape that I used to make a border. I found the Boggle image on Google and used a Manila folder as a pocket. There is an imprinted logo on the metal that I wanted to hide.
This is the original game. Visit her site for the printables below:

I have seen many versions of character traits lists but this one is more extensive and would be perfect for the intermediate grades. Free on TPT. (teachers pay teachers)
Used this poem last week to review rounding and estimating with my fourth graders. I had them write the poem on their rounding page in their math notebooks.
This is a great anchor chart for persuasive writing. I am posting this because I love her handwriting...so jealous!!!!
