My Lucky Day- Narrative Writing

I started out the lesson reading "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day."  we listed all the unlucky things that happened to him during the day.  We talked about how all the things were realistic.  (I have a few friends who get carried away with their exaggeration)

The children brainstormed ideas in their journals about having a "Lucky Day" and all the really good things that could happen in one day.  We broke it down into morning, noon and night.

I had my children use:
a 4-square graphic organizer
six trait writing checklist

We spent several days writing, revising and editing.  They published their stories.  They added a LUCK sign complete with a real lucky penny!(glued over shamrock)  This is a perfect prompt for March.

Our MCAS long comp is March 20th.  Finally...we can move on to a new type of writing!!!!
I feel so LUCKY!!!!

  1. I'd love to see your 4 square graphic organizer or read an explanation on how to use it.

Good Luck to you and your students on your state test. Our Writing test is two days at the end of March :(

  2. Lorraine, Please check out my post under writing about 5 paragraph essays. I explain 4-square in that post. I have the children create their own sheets now, because they don't get one on our state test...just a big box. I have them write the into in the middle of their paper. A big idea in the top of three boxes and the feeling/closing in the last box. They add details under the big ideas. If you have more questions I would love to help!

  3. I love this idea! I am planning writing activities for next school year and would love to use your idea. In fact, I have pinned many of your ideas today! Is there anyway I might be able to download your LUCK sign. Google docs won't give me permission. :( No worries, if you were not planning on sharing it. Thanks so much for the wonderful ideas!!
